Phase 1:
Before Your Move

Step 1:
Get Organized

Kick off your packing process by moving through your home one room at a time and making a plan of action for each.

Step 2:
Declutter

Take the opportunity to mark anything you think you could get rid of before you start packing, and keep track of how often you use in the next few weeks.

Step 3:
Lighten the Load

Once you've figured out what you don't use, collect your unwanted items and sell them online or at a yard sale, donate them to charity, or give them to friends and family.

Step 4:
Change Your Address

Be sure all of your mailing addresses will be switched over before moving day. Scheduling an address change is totally possible and is one less thing to worry about on moving day.

Phase 2:
Packing Tips for Moving

Tip 1:
Reinforce

Sturdy boxes, packing peanuts, bubble wrap, or even bulky sweaters—be sure you have the right materials to secure your most fragile of belongings.

Tip 2:
Get Creative

You'd be surprised how much stuff you can fit in a single box just by getting a little creative. Look at packing guides online to get some ideas on how to maximize your space!

Tip 3:
Prevent Spills

Moving any liquids or spillable containers? Put plastic wrap around things like shampoo and soap bottle openings to prevent leaks. You can even plastic wrap jewelry racks so they don't get tangled!

Tip 4:
Pack What You Need

Having important things close to you on moving day—like cash, chargers, and even a change of clothes—can ease some stress and be helpful in sticky situations. Set aside some essentials for a separate bag.

Tip 5:
Label, Label, Label

As you're packing things up, label each box by room or category. This will making your unpacking process ten times easier!

Phase 3:
On Moving Day

Step 5:
Have a Backpack Ready

Remember those essentials that you set aside? Don't forget to have that backpack ready to go and close by.

Step 6:
Review Moving Plans

If you're using professional movers or driving your own rental truck, make sure everything is good to go a few days before your move.

Step 7:
Prepare Pets & Kids

If you're moving with pets or kids, be sure any medication, snacks and toys for both are ready to go and not packed away or forgotten.

Step 8:
Clean!

Your new home will probably never be this empty again, so take advantage of it and get in some high-quality cleaning!
